Can stone paper replace traditional paper?

The appearance of stone paper is gradually being valued at home and abroad. Unlike traditional papermaking, the raw material of stone paper is mainly stone, a small amount of resin and some additives, which are made by a series of physical methods. Compared with the traditional paper manufacturing process, it is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

So, can stone paper replace traditional paper?

The whole process of stone paper does not require water beating and papermaking, and does not need to add a large amount of chemical agents, so it does not cause the problem of difficult wastewater discharge treatment, which is more environmentally friendly than traditional papermaking. The paper made from stone has a certain degree of whiteness, which is characterized by high tensile strength, good resistance to folding and tearing, tear resistance, water resistance, oil resistance, chemical resistance, and low temperature and humidity resistance.

In addition, the surface of the stone paper is smooth, it is not easy to grow mold, and it is not afraid of insects. Stone paper is suitable for printing, because its ink absorption is very good, and the ink printing has high definition and accuracy. At the same time, stone paper is naturally degradable, which is more environmentally friendly than traditional paper.

Of course, stone paper has its shortcomings. Under normal circumstances, the life of stone paper is about 20-30 years. However, stone paper will be powdered in less than 6 months under direct sunlight. Therefore, the storage time of stone paper is shorter than that of traditional paper. Due to such characteristics, stone paper cannot be used for storage of important documents.

In addition to storage time, stone paper is heavier than traditional paper, which is not convenient for binding and transportation. The scope of application is not as extensive as traditional paper. At present, stone paper is mainly used for printing books, newspapers, notebooks, product manuals, advertising lists, desk calendars, playing cards, and can also be made into various decorative packaging bags, shopping bags, and packaging boxes.

The main raw materials of stone paper are limestone and petroleum. The polyethylene, cement, etc. used in stone paper come from petroleum. Petroleum is a limited and non-renewable resource worldwide. Therefore, the sustainability of the development of the stone paper industry is facing severe challenges.

Traditional paper mainly uses forestry, plants and other raw materials with strong regeneration ability. As long as the country's reasonable planning forms a virtuous cycle of planting, conservation, felling, and replanting, it can meet the requirements of sustainable regeneration.

Stone paper has huge differences from traditional papermaking in terms of raw materials and production technology, which is a technological breakthrough; however, due to the narrow application range and non-renewable raw materials, it can only be used as a supplement to ordinary paper and cannot be completely replaced.
