Application of Stone Paper

What is the stone paper?

Stone Paper  is completely non-toxic, and is even food safe.It is made from 60-80% Calcium Carbonate (CaCO) with a small quantity (20-40%) of non-toxic resin (HDPE- High Density Polyethylene). Stone Paper eco-friendly product which does not utilize water or create air pollution. No chlorine or acids are utilized in the production process.

The Calcium Carbonate comes from limestone collected as waste material from existing quarries for the building and construction industry. It is ground up down to a fine powder like chalk and the HDPE acts as a binder for the Calcium Carbonate. It is tough, durable paper, water and tear resistant. Furthermore, it is  soft, smooth, bright white paper that performs like a film but without all the petroleum!

What is the difference between stone paper and ordinary paper?

Stone paper is like regular paper, only better. Unlike ordinary paper, stone paper is waterproof and tear-resistant, and there is no ink bleeding when writing. Stone paper is brighter, smoother and more environmentally friendly than ordinary paper. The materials used to make stone paper are environmentally friendly and non-polluting, and do not contain trees, water, bleach, acids and toxic chemicals. For ordinary pulp, producing one ton of traditional wood pulp paper usually requires 18 large trees, a lot of energy and 2770 liters of water. The stone paper is mainly made of waste scraps and crushed stones of the mining and construction industry. The calcium carbonate used is 80% -90%. Calcium carbonate is one of the most abundant substances in the world.

Recycling conventional pulp paper is also limited to multiple cycles. Traditional paper can only be recycled up to 7 times, and each recycling requires additional virgin fiber. Natural forests are often cut and burned to plant non-native, fast-growing trees. Stone paper produces no waste—in production or in the end product—and can be recycled indefinitely, making it the smarter paper choice.

Why use stone paper?

Stone paper is very similar to traditional wood-pulp paper, however, it’s waterproof, smoother, brighter, and more durable than traditional paper. Karst Stone Paper is ISO 14001:2004 certified, alongside ROHS, REACH and FDA. Most importantly, our stone paper has the C2C environment certificate.

Points to note when using stone paper

What happens to different pens on this paper?
Ballpoints and gel pens will be absolutely fine! However, be wary of fountain pens and felt tips. Depending on the construction of the tip, you may need to alter your grip, angle, or how hard you press down. Since the paper has no grain direction, writing on the paper with the same force will be unnecessary.

Can I use a pencil and is it erasable?
Yes, of course. You’ll find that since there’s no fibers in stone paper, pencil marks erase much easier and unlike some low-quality papers, you can’t erase a hole into it. Be careful not to sharpen too much though, the pencil may grab onto the paper like piercing with a needle. We recommend a thickness like 0.7 or greater.

Do I need a special pen or pencil to write on stone paper?
Nope! We tried and tested pencils and pens with no issue. In fact, since the stone paper absorbs less ink than regular paper, it looks cleaner and has zero bleed-through. Our recommended pen is a good ol' fashioned ballpoint. They may seem like a boring choice but you'll understand why once you feel the glide of a ballpoint on our paper. We have found that some fountain pens may take longer to dry than ballpoints. However, you may need to alter your grip, angle, or how hard you press down.
